Term 1, Week 3 2023

As we come to the end of our third week of Term One, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the 2023 academic year, and a special welcome to all those students and families who are new to the College.

On Wednesday 1 February we welcomed our Year 7 students, and all students in other year groups who were starting at our college for the first time. As part of the welcome assembly on that day, our Year 11 and 12 students assisted our newcomers to settle into their new surroundings. At our full college assembly on Thursday 2 February, we welcomed back all of our students as our Year 8 – 10 students also commenced their academic year.

Over the past few weeks, the Year 7 students have shown initiative and enthusiasm as they start their secondary school journey. Many staff have commented on their engagement and commitment to learning. It has been wonderful to see so many smiling faces each morning, as the students make new friends and settle into college life. As a college we look forward to building strong partnerships with families and supporting new students in their ongoing transition into the Lumen community.

As indicated in the communication sent to parents this week, on Monday February 20, there will be an opportunity for parents of Year 7 students to meet informally with the Head of Year 7, Mr James Castiello, and the Deputy Principal Middle School, Mrs Margarita Tranquille to discuss transition and support available for your child. Support with digital resources will also be offered by Ms Daisy Coma, Director of Pedagogy and Mrs Claire Hall, Director of Innovation as they step you through the use of SEQTA, OneNote and Teams.

A crucial aspect of the holistic education of all students is the home-school partnership. It has been pleasing to see high level of engagement from parents in the various information nights offered over the past couple of weeks. These Parent Information Nights offered a variety of workshops addressing a range of topics including social and emotional learning; supporting wellbeing; the Lumen Christi College Vision for Learning; Community and Pathways. There was also an opportunity for parents to engage in conversation and share common approaches to managing their child’s online use.

Another important opportunity for developing the parent-school partnership is through the Parent Voice. The next meeting of Parent Voice will take place on Thursday February 23, at 5.30pm in the Discovery Center. I would encourage you to attend this meeting if you are interested in developing your involvement with the College.

As the term progresses, we look forward to the many exciting opportunities that fill the calendar. I encourage you to take a few minutes to have a look at the College calendar which can be accessed via this link.

Please enjoy reading the following summaries which provide a snapshot of our first three weeks of term.

God Bless

Yagen House Valentine's Day Stall

On February 14th Yagan House ran a fundraiser for Valentine’s Day. Messages of love were sold as pre-orders and distributed to students and staff in the morning during homeroom, while during lunch there was a stall of chocolate hearts and red themed lollies. The day was a massive success with the stall selling out!

Open Days Earlier

The WA Universities are holding their Open Days much earlier this year. It is highly recommended for Years 11 and 12 students to register and attend Open Days to gain an understanding of the universities courses and programs to help in their decision making on the degree and where they want to study. Attend the upcoming University Open Days to see exhibitions, hear talks, get advice, enjoy food and entertainment and even win prizes.

Yagen Digital Art Tower

32 students had their work chosen for this project and this video is testament to their achievements. Thank you to the Perth Zoo for the kind gift of dozens of copyright-free photographs. The students made excellent use of them. Thank you also to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and Screenwest for giving us access to the wonderful Yagan Square digital tower. What a wonderful experience this has been.
