Monique Rose - Class of 2013
Current Profession:
Midwife
Where did life take you after graduation?
I went straight to university following graduation, majoring in flute performance at the UWA Conservatorium of Music. That degree was an incredible experience which culminated in a final recital performance in 2016, allowing me to showcase all the skills I'd gained throughout my studies. Following the completion of my undergraduate degree, I studied a graduate entry Master of Nursing Practice at Curtin University, completed in 2019, to become a Registered Nurse. My most recent completed degree was a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery at the University of Notre Dame in 2021, which qualified me as a Midwife. I commenced my PhD studies in midwifery in 2023, and I continue to work professionally as a Midwife while completing my full-time PhD studies.
Along the way I've worked as a retail employee, early childhood educator, flute tutor, Registered Nurse, Midwife, graduate research intern, and midwifery research assistant.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far?
It is so hard to pick just one! But my biggest highlight to date was being competitively selected for a full-time PhD scholarship to commence my doctoral studies. My PhD is tied to a novel Midwife-led MRFF-funded pharmaceutical clinical trial in pregnancy led by my primary supervisor Dr Zoe Bradfield, and I'm so grateful to be part of such an incredible, world-leading team. As part of my PhD work I received basic lab training and worked in a lab to process samples which was also very cool!
What is your fondest memory of life at Lumen?
Again, it's so hard to pick only one! I loved so much of my time at Lumen, where I had so many opportunities to engage in performing arts opportunities and performances. I was very involved with the school's music program and was a member of the College's concert band throughout my time at Lumen. I was thrilled to be chosen to perform in the band for the College's production of Peter Pan the Musical, and I loved the opportunities to play music throughout the year, particularly during yearly presentation night performances.
Have you been a part of any significant clubs, groups or affiliations since graduation?
I participated in volunteering during my university studies, at UWA with Aspire UWA (an organisation dedicated to helping high school students to consider and enter tertiary education), and Curtin Volunteers! (where I worked with primary school students to support their developing literacy skills). I was publications officer for the UWA Music Students' Society in 2016, and I played competitive netball with the UWA Netball Club during my undergraduate degree, where my team won our grand final in 2016. I am currently a member of the Armadale City Concert Band where I play flute and piccolo in the ensemble since joining in 2020. I won the Ray Larner Trophy for best concert band instrumentalist at the 2024 WA State Band Championships for my performance of Sousa's 'Stars and Stripes Forever'.
