Week Ten, Term One 2025
From the Principal
As we come to the end of Term One, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all families for your unwavering support throughout this term. The partnership between families and the College is vital in ensuring our students' success and well-being. Your involvement and encouragement play a crucial role in helping our students thrive academically, socially, and spiritually.
Over the school holidays, the Catholic community transitions from Lent to the joyous celebration of Easter, reminding us of new hope and new life. These themes symbolise renewal, fresh beginnings, and a brighter future. Embracing them helps us overcome challenges, seek growth, and foster optimism. In this Jubilee Year of Hope, let us allow these messages to inspire us each and every day.
Reflecting this spirit of hope and optimism, it was wonderful to see our students embody these values during the recent Interhouse Cross Country Carnival. It was a fantastic event, showcasing the spirit and determination of our students. Congratulations to Salvado House for being named champions on the day and to all participants and organisers for their outstanding efforts. Your enthusiasm and sportsmanship were truly commendable.
This event is a testament to the many opportunities our College provides. Across Term One, students have been involved in a range of pursuits with the most recent including the Astronomy Club evening, the SASJ sports carnival, the ACC Swimming meet and the rehearsals for the College production. As we head into the holidays, I encourage all students to rest and recharge and come back ready to embrace the opportunities that await in Term Two.
The Term One Interim reports were released to families this week. I encourage you to take the time to discuss these reports with your children. Reflect on their efforts, celebrate their achievements, and help them set goals for Term Two. This is an excellent opportunity to support and guide them in their academic journey at Lumen.
Thank you once again for your continued support. I wish you all a restful and joyous Easter break, filled with hope and renewal.

Interhouse Cross Country Carnival
Under perfect conditions, the 2025 Interhouse Cross Country Carnival was held on Wednesday, with a 3km course set up within the College boundaries. Year 7–9 students competed in the morning, and Year 10-12s competed after Break 1.
Competition was fierce and there were many excellent individual performances. After the Middle School event, Salvado House led but there were only 55 points between 2nd place and 7th place. This motivated many of the Senior School students to dig deep and in the end, Salvado held on for a comfortable win.
The final results were:
1st - Salvado House - 662 points
2nd - Yagan House - 542 points
3rd - Tangney House - 495 points
4th - MacKillop House - 485 points
5th - Campbell House - 414 points
6th - O’Connor House - 385 points
7th - Frassati House - 359 points
Well done to everyone who competed.

Astronomy Club

On Monday, 24 March our Astronomy Club met once again. 14 students and several parents joined Mr Longman, Mr Baker and Mr McDonald on the school oval. Students were organised into groups and each group was given one hour to take images of one nebula, one galaxy and one star cluster using our three smart telescopes. The students did an amazing job and some beautiful images were acquired. The Astronomy club will be editing these images over the next few weeks and they will displayed in SEQTA notices.

Vinnies Youth Corner

Vinnies Youth is full steam ahead!
Thank you to all the families who donated hygiene products this term. They have been received with much gratitude from the Kelmscott Vinnies. These items go out directly to the homeless in Kelmscott and surrounding areas as well as families who contact Kelmscott Vinnies for assistance.
Community Kitchen will operate fortnightly next term from week three onwards afterschool on Wednesdays from 3:15pm to 4:30pm. All students are welcome to attend and cook for just one or all of the Kitchens. Volunteers do earn House points towards the Cartoni Cup as well. Remember to check the notices in the days leading up to the cooking or email meJanine.creighton@cewa.edu.au for more information.
During Languages and Harmony Week, the Vinnies students were lucky enough to be able to sell Italian soft drinks with the proceeds being donated to Vinnies endeavours. I am happy to report that $290 was raised from this stall.
Wednesday after the Interhouse Cross Country Carnival, the Vinnies Youth team prepared a sausage sizzle for sale Break 2. The profits made will also be donated to assist those in need.
If you are cleaning out your cupboards over the holidays, please put aside any blankets, sleeping bags, jumpers or other clothing for the Winter Appeal next term.
Thank you to staff, students and families for your support of Vinnies this term, every little bit helps.

Year 7 Visual Arts – Self-Portrait Progress
The Year 7 Visual Arts classes are making great progress on their self-portraits, focusing on the elements of Tone/Value and Form. Students are exploring shading techniques and the use of pencil grades to create depth and bring their portraits to life, while also learning how to use light and shadow to define volume. Through this process, they are developing skills in observational drawing and pencil control. Next term they will add touches of colour and symbols representing their personalities and family connections in their backgrounds.

From 12- 14 March, the Year 12 cohort participated in the annual Year 12 Emmaus Retreat. The cohort was split across two venues, Fairbridge Village and Ern Halliday Recreation Camp, with a number of staff to guide and support them on this important rite of passage.
"This experience was set over a variety of games and activities which helped us view challenges, faiths and obstacles in our lives in a more open and inclusive way, while being equally respected and heard, no matter the beliefs.
The games and activities allowed students to broaden and improve their social circle, step out of their comfort zone and to forge friendships with those that they may not have gotten to know so well over the last few years.
We learnt about our relationship with God and the important people in our lives, and the personal reflection activities allowed us to strengthen and build up our trust with other member of our small groups.
On the final day of the Retreat, there was time for one last Liturgy. As we came to the end of the Retreat, we sat down and reflected on the memories that we had made throughout our time at school and were reminded how special we all are by God and one another".

VET News
Our VET students have been working hard this term, both in their internal and external courses. Internally, students have been engaging in hands-on learning experiences within our school facilities, gaining practical skills in the areas of performing arts, engineering and much more. Externally, many students have taken advantage of courses of their choice allowing them to gain real-world experience and insights into their chosen fields.
I look forward to a jam-packed Term Two, with many students going out on work placement.

Daniel Reardon - Class of 2009
Current Profession: Astrophysicist
Where did life take you after graduation? After graduation, I moved to Hobart to study physics at the University of Tasmania. I completed my bachelor of science and then did an honours project in astrophysics. I moved to Melbourne in 2014 to complete a PhD in astrophysics at Monash University. I was awarded my PhD in 2018 for my thesis on precision pulsar timing with radio telescopes. Since then I have been a postdoctoral researcher at Swinburne University of Technology. It is my dream job because it often doesn't feel like work. I find nothing more rewarding than solving the mysteries of the Universe. In my spare time I train for and compete in ultra endurance races like Ironman triathlons and trail ultra marathons.
What has been your biggest career highlight so far? Securing my dream job and leading impactful research that has been featured in press releases. I have been fortunate enough to communicate my science to the public.
What is your fondest memory of life at Lumen? Some very special teachers that believed in me and challenged me when they realised I needed it.
What advice do you have for current Lumen Christi College students? There are multiple paths to your dreams. Don't be disheartened if you miss an opportunity. Use the loss as fuel to take the next path.
