Week Six, Term One 2025

From the Principal

On Wednesday, 5 March the College celebrated its Ash Wednesday liturgy, marking the beginning of Lent. Lent is a special time in the church’s calendar where we reflect on our relationship with ourselves and with God. The Ash Wednesday message shared with our students and staff was an invitation for inner reflection, something that can be so challenging to do amidst the busy lives we lead. As we teach our students, it’s important to carve out time to reflect on who we are, how we contribute to the community we live in and the ways we treat and include others. The Lenten season gives us three ways to reflect as we prepare for Easter:

  • To pray, reflecting on our place in God’s community
  • To sacrifice, by giving up something or by taking up a new challenge for the benefit of others
  • To give, by offering our resources to those in need through almsgiving

All these actions shift the focus from ourselves to others, helping us be the loving people Jesus calls us to be.

This week we also held our Year 12 Emmaus Retreat, an opportunity for our most senior students to look inwards and reflect deeply about who they really are. The two groups, who journeyed to both Fairbridge and Ern Halliday, spent three days reflecting on the path ahead and their place in society. Retreat is often the most enriching highlight of a graduate’s high school journey and having spent time with each group these past days, I pray that each of them have grown from the experience.

This time next week, the College hosts its annual Harmony Day Community Mass which takes place on Friday, 21 March starting at 9:00am in the Sports Centre. All are welcome to join us and celebrate the rich diversity of our community. The Mass takes place during Languages and Harmony Week, and we look forward to the variety of food, activities, and concerts scheduled throughout the week.

Finally, I’d like to bring your attention to our first College Tour of the year which takes place on Thursday, 27 March. Our enrolments for the 2026 school year are almost full and places for 2027 are filling fast. If you are interested in enrolling your child at Lumen Christi College, we encourage you to book a place on our College Tour and submit your application as soon as possible.

God bless.

Astronomy Night

On Monday, 10 March we held our first astronomy night. Students and parents involved in the Astronomy Club joined Mr Longman and Mrs Poongavanon to undertake direct telescope observation of the night sky. We were blessed with excellent weather and clear skies. We had five telescopes set up and with these were able to view objects including the Moon, Jupiter and its four largest moons, the Orion nebula and the Beehive cluster. It was a fun and relaxed experience, and we look forward to the next one on Monday, 24 March.

Friday, 21 March - Harmony Day Community Mass, Student Cultural Performances and Cultural Dress Parade

Commencing at 9:00am on Friday, 21 March the College will hold its annual Harmony Day Mass. As previously advised, this Mass will take the place of the annual College Community Mass and will be held in the Clement Mulcahy Indoor Sports Centre.

This is a special celebration, being one of the rare opportunities that the entire school community comes together. Families and friends of the College are most welcome to attend.

Dress Requirements
On Friday, students are invited to express their families’ heritage by wearing their national or cultural costume in the annual parade. They may also choose to take the opportunity to represent and celebrate another culture.

  • Costumes must be planned in advance and should not include modern Australian fashion, casual dress, high visibility workwear or the College sports uniform.
  • Closed in shoes must be worn with all costumes. Makeup and jewellery that are part of the costume may be worn.
  • Students who do not dress in cultural costume must wear the College formal uniform. They are also encouraged to wear a splash of orange.
  • Students are reminded they need correct sports uniform for physical education lessons, including acceptable footwear. Likewise, closed in shoes are required for Science, Manual Arts and Home Economics classes.
  • All students are permitted to wear a splash of orange with their uniform throughout the week.
  • Cultural keychains will be available during breaks 1 and 2 each day, along with language badges for a gold coin donation.

Throughout Harmony/Languages Week, we invite students to engage with all the activities and performances that have been planned during break times for their enjoyment and education.

We thank you in advance for your support of our Harmony Week celebrations, a time to celebrate our inclusivity and the rich, diverse backgrounds within our college community.

We look forward to seeing you at the Mass.

VET News

Glory Stephen
Certificate II in Engineering Pathway students
Cassidy Brown

We offer a wide range of external VET courses, and if you’re not sure about a course, I encourage students to come and speak with me as I am always interested in introducing new VET courses.

Recently, Glory Stephen, a Year 12 student, approached me to express her interest in becoming a real estate agent. She is now studying for a Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice through West Coast Property Training, to obtain her real estate license upon graduation.

Last week, I visited the students in the Certificate II in Engineering Pathway course, taught by Daniel Wieman. I always enjoy seeing the students and observing what they are learning. It’s a pleasure to see how passionate they are about the course they are studying.

VET Spotlight

Congratulations to Cassidy Brown in Year 10 who has secured work placement at Front Cover for Hair. Cassidy is studying at WA Academy and hopes to gain an apprenticeship when she finishes school.

Project Compassion 2025

This Lent, we’re invited to Unite Against Poverty with Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. This year is especially significant as we celebrate the Jubilee Year - a time of renewal and solidarity.

Project Compassion 2025 shares three stories from around the world. We’ll meet Toefuata'iga - (Toy-foo-ah-tah-ing-ah) a young student from Samoa who faced severe water shortages at her school. Thanks to Caritas Australia and the generosity of supporters like you, her school now has a 10,000 L water tank improving hygiene and allowing the teachers to prioritise education.

We’ll get to know Lam from Vietnam, born with short stature, Lam faced social exclusion and limited employment opportunities – through the I-SHINE program, Lam is now a freelance graphic designer.

And we’ll meet Irene from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) who faced immense challenges after losing her father to war and raising her children in poverty. With support from Caritas Australia, Irene received vocational training in sewing and farming and can now support her whole family.

Watch our Introduction to Project Compassion film HERE - be inspired by 3 powerful stories of resilience and strength, and learn the impact that your support can have on vulnerable communities around the world.

Please donate today.

Lumen Christi families can support Project Compassion 2025 through the donation boxes in Homerooms, at the canteen or at this link.

Don’t forget to select your child’s House.

Bedfordale Bus Service - Updates

Due to an increase in the number of students using our Bedfordale Private Bus Service, the College has temporarily added an additional coaster bus to this service. Additionally, we are currently reviewing the existing bus stops and any requests for new stops that have been made. Parents will be notified of any changes to the bus route during the Term One holidays, with the new route effective from Term Two.

The College is also aware of recent issues with the Roll Call devices on the bus - new devices have been ordered and should arrive in the coming weeks.

Student Drop Off/Pick Up

A reminder that student drop off/pick up is not permitted via Entrance 1 (Station Street). This entrance is used predominantly for bus entry and exit and is a student walking zone. Please use Entrances 2 or 3 which are accessible off Mills Rd West.
