Week Ten, Term Three 2024

From the Principal

Today we celebrated the last official day of schooling for our Class of 2024. The Year 12s enjoyed a fun and memorable day, full of exciting activities and events. They started the day with a BBQ breakfast, followed by a year group assembly, mini-Olympics, their final House assembly, Principal’s Cup and colour run. It was a wonderful day and a fitting celebration to close out their formal day here at the College. To those preparing for exams over the next few weeks, we wish you all the very best. We look forward to welcoming all our Year 12s back to the College on Friday, 18 October to celebrate graduation.

Students have recently had the opportunity to display their athletic talents at the ACC Athletics Carnival and the ACC Inclusive Sports Athletics Carnival. Some fantastic results were achieved which are detailed later in this bulletin.

Those with talents in the Arts also had an opportunity to display their work at the recent College Art Exhibition. Over 300 visual and media artworks from students across all year levels were displayed, showcasing their artistic creativity.

Over the last fortnight we also celebrated Wellness Week, held several Business Market Stalls, and continued our Year 7 and 11 Mentorship Program, all of which is detailed further in this Bulletin.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and restful term break and look forward to welcoming students In Years 7-11 back for Term Four on Monday, 7 October.

Enjoy reading the rest of this bulletin.

God bless.

Year 12 Last Day

College Art Exhibition

This year marks a significant milestone as the College celebrates its 40th anniversary. On Wednesday evening, 11 September, Lumen hosted its annual Art Exhibition, with Visual Arts Captain, Devon Easton, serving as the MC.

Over 300 visual and media artworks from students across all year levels were displayed, showcasing their creativity and talent. We were honoured to have Jen Datu, an established WA artist and former Lumen student, as our special guest judge. Jen, who was the Visual Arts Captain in 2009—coincidentally Lumen’s 25th anniversary year—has exhibited her work both in Australia and internationally.

It was wonderful to welcome Jen back to Lumen to acknowledge the exceptional student works. The top Year 12 awards were presented to Devon Easton, who received ‘Highly Commended,’ and Mollie James, who took home the ‘Year 12 Most Outstanding’ award.

The evening was a celebration of the Arts, with live music performances by our students and an incredible dance routine adding to the atmosphere.

As part of tradition, the College selects a piece of artwork to become part of its ongoing legacy collection. This year, Principal Mrs Karen Prendergast chose a beautiful pencil drawing of a soldier’s uniform by Sian Oldfield, which was inspired by a student excursion to the WA Museum Boola Bardip.

Additionally, Mrs. Prendergast awarded the Principal’s Commendation Award to Mollie James for her moving and emotive work entitled, “54 No More!”  In this body of work, Mollie used the language of art to explore the harsh realities of gender-based violence.

Congratulations to all of the students whose work was selected for display!

Year 10 Business Bites Stalls

On Tuesday, 3 and Thursday, 5 September, the two Year 10 Business Bites classes ran market stall events in Jubilee Gardens. Having created their own businesses, the teams had products including cheesecakes, a sausage sizzle, soft drinks, lollies and a photo booth. The event was a great success with each of the nine groups completely selling out their stock. The events raised $1206 dollars for a range of charitable causes nominated by the students.

ACC ISP Athletics Carnival

On Friday, 6 September the ACC Inclusive Sports Team travelled to UWA Sports Park in Mt Claremont to compete in the annual ACC ISP Athletics Carnival.

The students were nominated for individual events, including 70 metre running, Long Jump, Shot Put and Vortex Throws. Some students volunteered to compete in extra individual events as there were several students absent.

Students also competed in shuttle and circular relay events, trying their best and showing wonderful sportsmanship.

Congratulations to Dalan Harris who won 1st place in the Open Division 2 Vortex Throw, throwing 37 metres.

A well-deserved ice cream was enjoyed by students on the bus ride back to school.

Thank you to the Diversity Eeducation staff for ensuring the students got to all their events.

Astronomy in STEM Club

Our STEM Club includes an astronomy team composed of three students: Nora, Omid and Kate. These students have been working closely with Astronomer Tim Young from ICRAR, using the SPIRIT online telescopes to capture images of deep-space objects such as nebulae and galaxies.

Throughout several sessions, Tim has guided the students in controlling the telescopes, imaging deep-sky targets, and processing the data to create stunning astrophotography. Although it's still early days, and there's much more that can be done to enhance the images, we are very proud of the results so far.

The image shown is of the Firebird Nebula, produced by Nora during the latest session with Tim on Thursday, 12 September 2024.

The astronomy team will continue working with the SPIRIT telescopes in Term 4, alongside other exciting projects!

ACC Athletics Carnival

On Friday, 13 September the Lumen Christi Athletics team competed at the ACC Athletics carnival. Approximately 100 students made up the team to contest 273 events throughout the day.

The leaderboard constantly changed throughout the day, but by the end of all events, Lumen Christi College finished in 3rd place overall, only 47 points behind the winner. Lumen Christi also won the Senior Boys shield.

This carnival was the most closely contested of all ten ACC carnivals, with only 163 points separating first and sixth.

Some notable performers were:

  • U/13 Female Championship: Stella Slee 3rd
  • U/16 Female Championship: Cailey Tower 4th
  • U/19 Female Championship: Brianna Lucas 4th, Sigourney Slee 5th
  • U/13 Male Championship: Caden Swanborough: 5th
  • U/14 Male Championship: Aiden Lucas 2nd

Another achievement from the day saw our College Captain, Jacob Eddington complete the ‘clean sweep’ of winning Age Champion at the ACC Carnival in Year 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. A feat I have never heard of previously being achieved! Well done on this outstanding achievement, Jacob.

Wellness Week

In Week Nine we celebrated Wellness Week. The week was filled with fun and engaging activities designed to support and promote R U OK Day through Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Connection. We had many activities running throughout the week such as a gratitude tree, kindness challenge, milo and coffee, and a mindfulness and colouring session. The biggest day was R U OK Day which we celebrated on Wednesday, kicking off with a pancake breakfast for students, and students and staff coming together at lunchtime for lots of stalls, music and conversations. It was wonderful to see staff and students participating and having conversations with each other to promote mental health awareness..

Year 7 Mentorship Program - R U OK

On Wednesday, 11 September the Year 11s came to support the Year 7s in the mentorship program that runs throughout the year. Students reflected on the theme of R U OK and explored ways to actively seek support for others. The counselling team came down and spoke to the students about how to support others and to personally seek support for themselves. This was a lovely day of support for all.

LUMENosity Specialist Dance – ATC&D WA Starz Competition

The LUMENosity Specialist Dance program proudly showcased their talents at the ATC&D WA Starz Competition, held at HBF Stadium last weekend. This prestigious event saw athletes from across Western Australia competing in dance and cheer categories over two days.

Lumen's two talented dance teams, Firestorm and Ultraviolet, delivered exceptional performances, standing out in their respective categories. Firestorm, competing in Secondary Hip Hop, wowed the judges and secured 1st place with their dynamic and high-energy routine. Ultraviolet brought grace and power to the stage, earning 1st place in Secondary Contemporary/Lyrical with their stunning, emotive choreography.

The teams were thrilled to receive feedback from an international panel of judges, with experts from the USA, UK, and Mexico offering valuable insights into their performances. The global recognition and feedback have been a motivating factor for the dancers as they continue to refine their skills.

Congratulations to Firestorm, Ultraviolet, and the entire LUMENosity Specialist Dance team on their outstanding success!
