Week Six, Term Three 2024

From the Principal

Welcome to the Lumen Bulletin for Week Six, Term Three. The last fortnight has seen both Science Week and English Week take place, which provided students with an exciting variety of learning activities both in and outside the classroom. Some of these activities included a science show, an animal ark incursion, a chemistry excursion, Book Week dress up, and Write a Book in a Day.

The last fortnight has also seen our Year 7 students enjoy their Year 7 Social, and our Year 11 students enjoy their River Cruise. These events are a wonderful opportunity for students to come together in a social setting and to continue to build connections and friendships with one another.

Our talented dance students have been very busy rehearsing ahead of next week’s sold-out Dance Showcase, which is set to be an impressive display of creativity and skill. I look forward to watching the performance along with the hundreds of family members and friends who will be in the audience.

We have also commenced the process of appointing the 2025 Student Leadership Team, with incoming College Captain nominees delivering speeches to their cohort earlier this week. Best of luck to everyone involved.

Next Thursday we will celebrate all the fathers, grandfathers, uncles and father-figures in our students’ lives at our Fathers’ Day Breakfast. I look forward to seeing many of our community members at this special event.

God bless.

Animal Ark Incursion

On Thursday, 15 August we were lucky enough to host a team from Animal Ark who brought a range of creatures to celebrate Science Week! Students from Years 9 to 12 were able to see, learn about, and even hold animals such as tree frogs, snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, and a bobtail lizard which Miss Carr got particularly attached to!

The Animal Ark team taught us to appreciate the indigenous animals our region has to offer, even though they are not ‘cute and fluffy’, and our students represented Lumen proudly – asking insightful questions and handling the animals with care. We were able to link our learning about adaptations to understand how these animals survive in the natural world. Thank you to all who attended and to Miss Carr, Miss Gaffney, Miss Poongavanon, Miss Barndon, Mr Dueman, and the Animal Ark team!

On 15 August, the Year 10 Science class attended the Animal Ark Incursion, where we explored a fascinating array of creatures, including snakes, green tree frogs, spiders, fossils, shells, scorpions, and bobtail lizards. We discovered that scorpions change colour under UV light and observed two venomous snakes, the Tiger Snake and King Brown Snake, safely enclosed. We also handled a non-venomous children's python, which can live up to 30 years and occasionally consume other snakes. Bob, the bobtail lizard, with its triangular head and bright blue tongue, has a unique tail resembling its head, hence the nickname "two-headed skink," which stores fat for winter. Green tree frogs, my personal favorite, are known for their distinctive honk, sounding up to 75 times per minute. They are extremely cute and calm. We are grateful to Animal Ark for visiting Lumen and providing us the opportunity to learn about and interact with these captivating reptiles.

Plasma Cut Projects

The Design and Technology Learning Area recently purchased an ARCDROID - CNC Plasma Robot cutter thanks to funding provided from the College Parent Voice. Our Year 9 Materials Metal students have utilised this technology to draw designs in AutoCAD and then cut them out using the Arcdroid Plasma Cutter. As with any new technology, there have been teething issues which we have eventually solved. The students have embraced the freedom of this design task and have produced some excellent work. I thank our technician, Colin Gotch who has spent numerous hours researching the use of the Arcdroid as well as mounting it on a portable table.

Year 7 Social

On Friday, 16 August (Week 5), we held the Year 7 Social event in the form of a movie afternoon. As we are halfway through the year, the purpose of this event was to encourage the Year 7 students to continue to build connections and friendships with others in their year group, and to socialise in this setting. It was a great event with lots of photobooth memories, laughter and good chats amongst the students.

EVATT Competition Round

On Friday, 9 August Year 12 students Angel Garavillas and Parastoo Azimi participated in the Evatt Competition Round held at Iona Presentation College.

The EVATT competition is a Model UN debating and diplomacy competition for high school students in Years 9-12. In Evatt, students partner up to represent a member country on the UN Security Council, and then debate issues through a simulated UN debate. The competition itself is run by UN facilitators and judges.

The night was a great success with Angel and Parastoo performed very strongly representing France.

Dance Showcase Sunday Rehearsal

On Sunday, 18 August our dedicated dance students participated in an all-day Sunday rehearsal in preparation for the upcoming Dance Showcase. The rehearsal was filled with energy and excitement as students eagerly showcased their in-class dances, fine-tuning their performances for next week’s event.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated their remarkable skills and creativity, bringing their choreographed pieces to life with enthusiasm and passion. The rehearsal was a crucial step in ensuring that each performance is polished and ready to shine on stage.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and commitment our dance students have shown in preparing for the showcase. Their energy and excitement are contagious, and we can’t wait to see them light up the stage next week with their amazing performances.
