Week Three, Term Three 2024

From the Principal

Welcome to the first Lumen Bulletin of Semester Two. While these Bulletins are usually published every fortnight, this edition is a reaching you few days late so that I can share some very exciting news with you. As I mentioned last term, due to an increase in enrolment numbers, the College will be expanding the House system in 2025 with the addition of two new Houses. Earlier today, we shared with the students these new House patrons and colours. I encourage you to watch the video below to hear more about these new Houses.

Lumen Christi College extends its heartfelt gratitude to Year 8 student, Laya Dainashius for the outstanding design that served as the inspiration for the College's 40th anniversary memorial badge.

Laya’s design was revealed to the College at the assembly on Wednesday, 24 July.  She was awarded with a framed commemorative poster and a gift voucher. Laya will receive the first badge off the presses.

Her creativity and talent have beautifully captured the essence of the College, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. Lumen thanks Laya for her exceptional and valued contribution. You are a Light of Creativity!

Year 11 Chemistry Students Explore Science at Murdoch University

On Thursday, 27 June the Year 11 Chemistry students had the opportunity to visit Murdoch University for a day dedicated to exploring the interesting fields of medical, molecular, and forensic sciences. This end-of-term excursion was a highlight for the students, offering them hands-on experiences and insights into potential future careers.

The students participated in a series of four engaging workshops, each led by university professors. These workshops were designed to provide the students with a deeper understanding of various scientific disciplines and their real-world applications.

One of the workshops delved into the world of disease and diagnosis. Here, students learned about a diagnostic technique used in modern medicine. In another workshop, students explored the colorimetry of food, a topic that combines chemistry and food science. Also, the technology and techniques used in forensic science was a significant focus of the day. Students were introduced to a method employed in crime scene investigations and the scientific principles behind them.

Overall, the exploration day at Murdoch University was an enjoyable experience for both students and staff. It not only broadened the students' knowledge and appreciation of the sciences but may have inspired them to consider future studies and careers in these exciting fields.

EVATT Competition

On Thursday, 25 July Lumen Christi College students participated in the Evatt Competition Workshop held in the Discovery Centre. The event also had students form Guildford Grammar, Perth Modern, Rossmoyne and Mt Lawley High Schools in attendance.

The workshop was a session on the rules of the EVATT Competition and an opportunity for students to ask any questions to the judges and the convenors prior to the start of the rounds. The EVATT competition is a Model UN debating and diplomacy competition for high school students in Years 9-12. In Evatt, students partner up to represent a member country on the UN Security Council, and then debate issues through a simulated UN debate. The competition itself is run by UN facilitators and judges.

The event was a great success with all students.

Year 12 Children, Family and Community

Year 12 Children, Family and Community students recently had an assessment based on creating a care package. They were then tasked to create one item from that care package. To coincide with the Vinnies blanket appeal, the students finger knitted blankets with many never having knitted before. The result was fantastic.

Out of School Achievements

On Saturday, 22 June Year 10 student Hannah Altofer, who is a senior member of the Australian Girls Choir, participated in three showcase concerts. I had the privilege of attending this event and witnessing Hannah's performance. As a second-year performing choir chorister, Hannah showcased her talents through a diverse repertoire, including singing, dancing, and a flute solo. The overall standard of the performances was exceptional, providing a delightful experience for the audience. Hannah's commitment to rehearsing outside of school hours reflects her multi-talented dedication.
