Term 4, Week 7 2022
Over the past few weeks, our students have been busy with a range of activities across all years groups, that have added to the excitement as we move into Advent.
Last week we were delighted to welcome the class of 2028 and their parents for their orientation. We look forward to welcoming them as a college community when they join us as Year 7’s in January.
Over the past couple of weeks, our current Year 7s participated in their annual Emmaus retreats as well as a Civics and Citizenship excursion to complement the work they have been doing in HASS.
In the Outdoor Education Learning Area, students have completed their expeditions giving them the opportunity to practice the skills they have been learning in class, as well as strengthen friendships and gain new experiences.
Students in Years 8 and 9 enjoyed a social afternoon including a Silent Disco, and the Year 10s concluded their dance program which culminated in their Dinner Dance and a chance to put their new skills into practice.
The Year 9 HASS elections built great excitement within the year group and today they had the opportunity to meet with the Federal member for Burt, Minister Matt Keogh MP, to discuss aspects of life as a member of parliament. Minister Keogh also officially opened our new outdoor classroom, a project for which we received significant funds from the Federal Government. We are very excited about being able to use this new learning space and are grateful for the government support we received.
Throughout the semester we have been running an E-Sports competition, which has been an exciting opportunity for students to get involved in a different aspect of college life. Two competitions were held, both of which were supported by large numbers of students. Year 10 students were victorious in both competitions! We look forward to continuing with this competition next year.
As we enter the last couple of weeks of the academic year, preparations are starting for our Illumenating Christmas community event which takes place on the evening of December 7th. We look forward to seeing you there.
God Bless

Year 10 Dinner Dance

The year 10 students of Lumen Christi College looked every bit the part at their Year 10 Dance. The Dance was held at the Gosnells Golf Club, who provided our students with delicious Canapes. Our young ladies looked stunning and our young gentleman looked dashing, all dressed up for the Dance. There was a buzz of enthusiasm at the Dance Lessons held at the College- and on the night the Year 10 students were eagerly wanting to showcase all that they had learnt. Lots of prizes were awarded to some of the students. It was wonderful to see the students getting involved and getting their ‘groove on”. Teachers joined in with the dancing and a wonderful night was had by all.

HASS Year 7 Civics & Citizenship Excursion
All Year 7 HASS classes experienced first- hand Western Australia’s political system in the annual Civics and Citizenship excursion to Parliament House. Students engaged in the election process, modelled federation and the development of the Australian Constitution, many Queens wore the crown on the day. Students visited Parliament House where they walked the halls of our democratic system, connecting with the history of our Western Australian Parliament. Students through their studies and HASS and the excursion engaged in their rights and responsibilities in democracy.

HASS Year 9 Election

This term the Year 9 HaSS students studied the Election process, a focus on preferential voting and how Political parties may influence voters. With the assistance of the Electoral commission, the students were engaged in a ‘real life’ election. The Year 9’s were required to form Political parties, decide on an appropriate platform and create an election campaign, including an election video. B block was a sea of colour with all the political posters on display. On Monday 14 November the students lined up to file through the polling place and cast their votes.
Congratulations to the winners “The Start Party” led by Tanya Marufu whose platform was “I am for everyone” promising to be a hands on leader making Lumen a better place for students and staff including daily affirmations and budget increases! The Student election was a fun and educational experience to learn how the voting system works.

Remembrance Day

On November 11th, the College Community gathered in the Jubilee Gardens to remember and pay respect to the men and women who have served and are still serving in our defence forces. Remembrance Day is a day that signifies the ending of war on the Western Front and conclusion of World War 1. It is the day that Germany called for an armistice in order to secure a peace settlement and accept the allied terms of unconditional surrender. Today, it is a day to remember, pay respects and to thank those that have served. It was a moving whole community event that fittingly paid respects to our defence forces.

Aladdin Cast Announcement

An exciting end to the year, with the 2023 Whole School Musical being announced. Students attended rigorous auditioning; learning dances, songs, and monologues, for their chance to be a part of the Aladdin JR Cast and Crew. Students began rehearsals soon after and are well on their way to developing this amazing, colourful, and entertaining performance. Arts Staff are eager to work with this outstanding cast and are excited to see this show develop. Congratulations to all of the successful students and all the best to everyone involved in this performance.

On Friday, the 18 November we welcomed the new students. The Year 6 students engaged in learning opportunities in Science, Physical Education and Humanities. The House Coordinators inducted the students into their new House and challenged them to navigate our campus in ' the amazing race'. Students met new friends and enjoyed the varied and exciting activities. Year 7 Emmaus Retreat

During week 5 and 6, the year 7 students participated in their Emmaus retreats. The students are led through the retreat by the College teaching staff. The aim of the day includes helping students to understand their emotions, teaching students about gossip and how it can damage the human dignity of others and recognising the gifts and talents that God has given and how they can be used for good. It is a day for students to be brave and step outside their comfort zone in a safe and supportive setting. It was wonderful to see the students working together and having fun while being supportive of their peers.

E-Sports Tournament

Over the course of the semester, we have been running an E-Sports competition at Lumen Christi. E-Sports helps to develop teamwork and communication skills in a safe and friendly environment, as well as providing an opportunity for students to compete in an inclusive competition. The first competition was NBA2k22 and was won by year 10 students Jacob Wilson and Ethan Van Der Merwe. The second competition was Mario Kart, and was won again by a year 10 student Jordan McGowan, who just edged out year 7 student Dalila Wilkes. Well done to all who participated in these great events.

Year 9 and 10 Outdoor Education Expeditions

During week 5, 65 year ten outdoor education students embarked on their Margaret River expedition. The weather was not on our side as the rain kept coming however the students thoroughly enjoyed their activities, which included mountain biking, caving, abseiling and hiking. They are to be commended on their efforts.
The year nine outdoor education program came to a close this week with 89 students on their expedition to Dwellingup. Students were delighted with some overcast, however, clear weather. They participated in canoeing, a high ropes course, regaining and water team building. Students should be congratulated on their efforts throughout the year.

Aspire Excursion UWA
On Wednesday 29th November, 31 year 9 students attended the Aspire UWA Race Around the Campus excursion.
Aspire UWA endeavours to provide students from partner schools the opportunity to see how much fun university can be. During this one-day event held at the University of Western Australia’s Crawley Campus, students will engage in taster activities from different faculties/learning areas and student clubs while they explore the campus.
