Term 4, Week 4 2022

We’ve had a very eventful first half of Term 4 here at Lumen, with several events and excursions occurring over the past four weeks.

Our Annual Music Concert took place in week 2 and was a fantastic display of our students varied musical abilities. It was great to see a broad range of musical ensembles including the College Choir, Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band, Rock Bands, Soul Band and our Year 11 and 12 Certificate Bands.

At the end of week 2, we farewelled our Year 12 students at their formal graduation events. Families and friends joined the whole school to fill the Sports Centre for the Graduation Mass and Assembly in the morning. This was followed by the Graduation Ceremony in the evening. As well as formally acknowledging our graduates, the ceremony also included the presentation of Year 12 awards. A full list of our award winners can be found here. I would like to wish our Year 12 ATAR students all the very best in their exams. I would also like to wish all our graduates the best of luck in their future endeavours and look forward to hearing where their paths take them.

Recently, our Year 8 and 9 students took part in their Emmaus Retreats, with the Year 7 Retreat taking place in the coming weeks. The annual Emmaus Retreat program provides an opportunity for students to encounter Jesus thorough the Gospel story taking place on the Road to Emmaus and is a very special part of the life of the College.

This evening our Year 10 students will celebrate the year at their Dinner Dance which is taking place at the Gosnells Golf Club. I trust they will have a wonderful evening!

This term’s events continue next week, with the Year 11 Semester 2 examinations commencing and the Year 10 Outdoor Education students participating in a three-day expedition. Year 8 and 9 students will also take part in their social events next Friday.

I hope all students enjoy the extra day’s holiday on Monday, as the staff complete one of our annual Professional Learning days.

God Bless.

College Principal

Emmaus Retreats

On Friday, 28 October, Year 9 students participated in their annual Emmaus Retreat at the Champion Centre in Armadale. During the day, students explored the themes of the future, worry and hope and looked at who was guiding them along the way. The Retreat was facilitated by College staff who shared their experiences with students across the day and led different activities and reflections that enhanced the material covered in each session.

On Tuesday, 1 and Wednesday, 2 November, the Year 8 students had their Emmaus Retreat. Students enjoyed the many activities that were run by the youth ministers and learned many new concepts like Community in Christ and Stewards of Creation. Students worked in groups with a leader who stayed with them for the entire retreat. They learned about key concepts including Community in Christ, more specifically communities of family, school, and church. On the second day, students learned about the steward of creation and how the human body is unique and different. They also explored different aspects of creation including the universe and plants.

Both retreats allowed students to build stronger relationships with their peers as well as connect with God.

Year 12 Graduation

The Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2022 took place on Friday, 21 October at the College sports centre, with more than 600 guests in attendance. The evening provided the community an opportunity to celebrate the many successes of the graduating cohort, through recognition of their achievements as Lights of Faith, Welcome, Creativity, Example and Excellence. We again congratulate those students who were recognised with the Lumen Christi College Medal of Excellence, Lance Dcruz, Jason Haddad, Rocky Mai, Shevana Pado and Hudson Wheeler, for their all-round contribution across the past six years of schooling. As we watched with pride as our students formally transitioned from the College to the next stage in their journey after school, we thank the Year 12s for all that they contributed to the College community. We extend our thanks to the many College staff who were involved in the planning of the event throughout the year, and in conjunction with the Year 11 student leaders, those who carried out roles across the evening.

Lumen Christi College Vinnies Youth Conference

In week 3 of this term the Vinnies Winter Appeal was launched for 2022. This year, we are collecting for our local Vinnies Kelmscott Conference which means all donations will benefit those living within the local community. The Lumen Christi College Vinnies Youth Conference worked hard to ensure that Christmas Hamper boxes were decorated and ready to go to Homerooms at the time of the launch. All students and families can make donations of non-perishable items through their Homeroom prior to the end of week eight.

Week 3 also saw the resurrection of our LCC ‘Soup Kitchen’ with the Vinnies Youth Team creating salads for the Vinnies Kelmscott Kitchen soup kitchen which runs on Thursday afternoons from the Good Shepherd community hall. The Vinnies Youth Team has committed to cooking throughout term 4 with our next endeavor to include cakes and desserts.

MACA 200 Ride for Research

Early on the morning of Saturday, 15 October, a large contingency of Lumen Christi College students manned the first ‘pit stop’ at the MACA 200 Ride for Research to help support those that were participating in the ride. The ride helps to raise funds for cancer research and the Harry Perkins Institute. Lumen students gave out snacks, water, and lots of encouragement to the 2000+ riders that came through the pit stop in the couple of hours it was manned. All students were able to claim Christian Service Learning hours for their time but more importantly, got the opportunity to serve those that are committed to helping the Harry Perkins institute who support people when they are at their most vulnerable.

ACC Inclusive Sports Multi Sports Carnival

On Friday, 29 October twelve of our Diversity Education students took part in an ACC Inclusive Sports Multi Sports day at John XXIII College. The Lumen team joined with students from other colleges to learn new skills and play modified games. Some of the sporting organisations offering these activities were cricket, soccer, rugby, netball, badminton, volleyball and rowing. The students enjoyed all the activities. It is hoped they may access some of these sporting opportunities at a community level in the future.

Year 7 Social Event

On Friday, 28 October the Year 7 cohort celebrated with a social event. The students viewed a movie in the Performing Arts Centre, and then shared in a sausage sizzle dinner. The attendance at this event was excellent, and it was a great chance for the students to socialize outside of school hours. The Year 7s all conducted themselves well and had lots of fun. I would like to give a big thank you to all staff and students who made this event a huge success.
