Our Philosophy

Lumen Christi exists to be a centre for educational excellence within the local community. As a Catholic Co-educational Secondary College, our Vision is for all members of our community to be ‘Beacons of the Good News.  People who help make God known and present in our world today’.  We strive towards this through the daily practices employed to give life to our Mission: ‘to be an inclusive, creative learning community centred in Christ, committed to the education and development of each individual in a changing world’. This mission is at the heart of all College pursuits and endeavours; fostering personal, social, physical, emotional and spiritual growth alongside academic excellence.

Our College symbol, a burning lamp, represents 'the light of Christ', given in the Latin words 'lumen christi'. The College motto ‘Christ My Light' is a constant reminder to our school community that the life and teachings of Jesus are ones to which we aspire. Within this context, Lumen Christi College provides a Christian community where every student is offered positive learning opportunities and encouraged to develop their true potential in preparation for a fulfilling role in life.

The promotion of excellence encourages students to do ordinary things extraordinarily well. Staff lead by example, aspiring to uphold Gospel values and so bring the human face of Jesus to our student community. Treating all people with dignity, respecting differences, promoting challenges, rewarding initiative and indeed comforting the downcast are central to this role. Encouraging pride in self, the desire to learn and a willingness to engage in all aspects of College life, staff members nurture the drive necessary to achieve excellence amongst the Lumen Community.

The life and vibrancy evident in our College is maintained by the joint commitment of staff, participation of students and active involvement of parents. The first educators of their children, parents have a lifelong influence on their development.   Through actively supporting the aims and policies of the College parents assist individuals to achieve their potential, and therefore, the College to fulfil its objectives. These are:

  • To develop and nurture the spiritual dimension of each student; to enable each student to understand the truths of the Catholic faith and to bear witness to a Christian way of life
  • To develop fully the intellectual dimension of each student
  • To develop in students an awareness of social responsibility, relating in particular to the family, the Church and wider community
  • To help students appreciate the values of their own culture gain an awareness of the positive aspects of other cultures
  • To foster the sense of vocation inherent in each student and assist them in cultivating the skills necessary to pursue their calling
  • To develop each student's physical fitness, skill level and sense of fair play in sport
